Gratitude & Gingham for Easter

In the Engelgau household it is tradition that every holiday requires a big feast. Traditionally the Easter meal has always been ham, scalloped potatoes, green bean casserole, spinach apple salad, Great Grandma’s cheese bread, and pineapple upside down cake for dessert. We share our big delicious meal around a table with our family and friends.

This year was the first year, obviously with the shutdown, that was not possible. I started off my Easter morning by making a big breakfast for myself and as I sat down to eat I couldn’t help but feel a little bummed that I couldn’t share this special holiday with my loved ones in person.

I began working on chores around my apartment and was then stopped in my tracks.

I glanced out my window to see a man in doctor scrubs and a backpack walking to what I am sure was to go to work in a hospital. I actually got emotional thinking about this man and how he has dedicated his life to healing others and is now, unfairly, having to put his own life at risk to do that. 

I sat back and took a moment to realize how incredibly luck I am.  Yes, I maybe stuck inside, but I have soooo much to be grateful for: my loving family, supportive friends, awesome roommate, my rockin’ job, my beautiful apartment, and so much more. 

Every holiday I try to take time to recognize all the blessing I have in my life. This Easter that was amplified 100 times! It was Easter, but it was more like spring Thanksgiving. 

My roommate and I decided to get dressed up, we did egg hunts for each other with the Easter goodies from my Mom, we did a photo shoot on the fire escape, made my family’s traditional meal, minus the ham (couldn’t get it delivered), and gave thanks for all the blessings in our lives.

I am so glad that we celebrated and got dressed up. Dressing up made it feel like an important event and it gave us some motivation to see the good things in life right now.
